6th Annual Drowning Impact Awareness Month Every year, an average of 20 children drown in Maricopa County. As of July 17 of this year, there have been 9 child fatalities and 65 water incidents in which the children survived; an estimated 10 percent of these have permanent neurological damage. This is the sixth year that the Phoenix Children's Hospital has designated August as Drowning Impact Awareness Month (DIAM). Phoenix Children's Hospital will be distributing over 75,000 purple ribbons to remind people to protect kids around water. You will see the purple ribbons at Hospitals, local Fire Departments, businesses, schools, churches and worn by media. We would like to invite you to help spread the word by, • Wear a ribbon everyday throughout August. • Distributing DIAM cards and ribbons from your lobby and/or lunch room. • Local Businesses supporting the Drowning Impact Awareness Campaign. • Include water safety information in newsletters. • Insert ribbons and/or cards into invoices or shipments. • Customize and post the DIAM flyer in prominent locations in your building. • Develop your own way to "get the word out". If you'd like to get involved, email LaDon Dieu, of Phoenix Children's Hospital, to request purple ribbons or volunteer for Water Watchers at Phoenix Children's Hospital. For the entire month of August, purple ribbons will be tied to the trees in front of Phoenix Children's Hospital, one for each water-related incident involving a child in Maricopa County since January 1, 2000. More than 1020 ribbons will be displayed. Join us Tuesday, 7/28 at 10 am for the official DIAM kickoff, in the Mel Cohen Conference Center at Phoenix Children's Hospital.
