At about 10:30 a.m. Monday, 9-year-old Alexis Duran saw his 3-year-old neighbor go through an open gate to the pool in their Phoenix apartment complex near Indian School Road and 27th Avenue.
Then he heard the gate slam shut behind the boy.
Duran said he saw the boy splashing and flailing his arms in the hot tub.
He was unable to get in, so he tried knocking on the victim's father’s apartment door. When that didn't work, he told a security guard what was going on.
“He got him out and he put him on the floor and he, he was doing like this (pumping chest) trying to take the water out,” said Duran.
“When police arrived the child was conscious and the fire department took him directly to the hospital,” said Phoenix Police Officer Chad Ryan.
Phoenix police said the father was sleeping at the time and the child’s mother was at school.
It’s unclear why the gate was left open.
Duran, who wants to be a police officer, is glad he was there.
“I was excited to help him get out,” said the 9-year-old.
And it’s a good thing he did.
“He’s expected to make a full recovery,” said Officer Ryan.
