A 19-month-old boy drowned Tuesday morning after he slipped away from his sleeping father and wandered into the pool.Police Sgt. Brian Kozak said Richard Joseph Shoemaker fell asleep on his father's chest about 9:30 a.m. but was missing when his father woke up an hour later,
The father found Richard floating face down on the surface of the pool in the 1700 block of West Carmel Avenue and administered CPR at the direction of a 911 dispatcher, Kozak said.
The boy was taken to Desert Samaritan Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
Kozak said the family's pool does not have a fence around it, and the sliding glass door leading to the back yard is not self-latching. A bar that usually is shoved against the door to keep it closed had been removed.
