A Chandler toddler nearly drown Wednesday in a canal, fire officials said.
The 23-month-old fell in the swift-moving water about 6 p.m. while playing with a group of neighborhood children. The water was 2 feet deep, but its strong current carried the child 300 feet downstream before he was rescued by neighbors, said Jeff Stocker, a Rural Metro fire department spokesman.
The child's name was not released.
When a group of children playing with the boy noticed he had fallen in the canal near the 15800 block of East Chandler Heights Road, half the group followed him down-stream while the others ran for help, Stocker said.
When paramedics arrived, Stocker said, the boy was breathing on his own. He was flown to Deseart Samaratin Medical Center as a precaution.
