A 1-year-old north Phoenix boy was hospitalized in critical condition Friday after falling into a backyard swimming pool, a fire official said.
Benjamin Stelfox apparently got outside through an Arizona room about 8:30 a.m. and fell into the unfenced pool, Fire Department Deputy Chief Bob Khan said.
The near-drowning was the 12th water incident in the Valley involving a child this year, Khan said.
Four children have drowned this spring, making this one of the worst springs on record, Khan said.
Benjamin's mother found him face down in the shallow end of the pool at the home in the 6700 block of East Eugie Terrace.
She performed CPR on the boy until paramedics arrived and took him to Good Samaritan Regional Medical Center.
