The 3-year-old son of a Tempe firefighter fell into the family pool and drowned Sunday while his Dad stepped into the house momentarily, authorities said. The child's father speculated that the family's playful Rottweiler dog may have accidentally pushed the boy in the water, a Fire Department official said.
Weston Letter was without a heartbeat or pulse by the time his father, Thomas, pulled him out to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation, said Phil Rohe, a Tempe fire investigator.
Westin was pronounced dead at Desert Samaritan Medical Center a short time after the accident, which occurred just before 4 p.m. at the family home in the 1100 block of West Breckenridge Way in Gilbert.
Father and son were out in the back yard near the pool when the elder Letter went inside, Rohe said. Thomas Letter's wife was inside the house taking care of their 3-month-old twins at the time, authorities said.
