An 8-month-old girl became Mesa's second child drowning victim in as many days today.
Cathy Marie Romero was pronounced dead after being taken to a hospital about 2:30 p.m. after police officers were unable to revive her.
The infant's mother was watching five children and bathing four of them at the time of the drowning in an apartment in the 4000 block of East Caballero Street, police spokesman Johnny Lopez said.
The mother asked her nephew to watch the children in the bathtub while she went to attend to the fifth child, Lopez said. Several minutes later one of the other children from the tub came to the mother carrying the 8-month-old, who was unconscious.
The tragedy followed the drowning death on Monday of 3-year-old Colin Keran, who was found floating in an apartment complex swimming pool while his 5-year-old brother played nearby.
