A Phoenix man drowned Tuesday while removing plant growth from an artificial lake at the Crystal Gardens housing development, 108th Avenue and Palm Lane.
The man, 28, was working with three others in a small boat when the vessel started leaking, said Division Chief Art Snapp, a spokesman for the Avondale Fire Department.
The nose of the boat dipped into the water, pitching the man forward and into 12 feet of water, Snapp said. The man was wearing tall boots that filled with water and anchored him to the bottom.
Crystal Gardens features a first-of-its-kind project in which water is pumped into artificial lakes then is naturally purified as it flows past aquatic plants that absorb nitrates.
