A 2-year-old Mesa girl's grandfather is credited with saving her from possible serious injury or death Thursday night after he performed CPR on her after he found her floating in his backyard pool, Mesa and Gilbert fire officials said.
Fire Department spokesman Dave Johnson said the girl was outside with her grandfather while her mother was in the house near Baseline Road and 24th Street, said Johnson.
Somehow the girl got into the pool, where firefighters believe she was floating for about a minute before she was found, Johnson said.
A Gilbert fire rescue crew also responded because they were closer and arrived first. When they arrived the grandfather had already performed CPR and the girl was breathing but unconscious, Gilbert fire spokesman Mike Connor said.
The girl was vomiting water, Connor said, and was unresponsive on the way to Banner Desert Medical Center.
Mesa fire expected her to recover, Johnson said.
