HOW IT WORKS:
Firefighters and volunteers including Surprise Vice Mayor Joe Johnson will be going door to door, beginning in the Kingswood Park area at 9 a.m., to ask families if they would be interested in a free fence. They have funds to provide 10 to 15 fences. If a family is interested and qualifies for the donation, the pool fence company will take measurements that day.
WHO IS ELIGIBLE:
Families who have children age 6 or younger and exhibit a financial need.
WHO IS PROVIDING THE FUNDS:
The Valley of the Sun United Way and the United Phoenix Firefighter's Association partnered in 2003 to create the Adopt-a-Pool-Fence program. Today marks the first time the program will come to Surprise.
SIGNIFICANCE:
On May 2, a Surprise toddler drowned in a backyard swimming pool. That incident helped to motivate the local firefighters union to bring this program to a Northwest Valley city, union President Julie Moore said.
