A 6-year-old Phoenix boy who drowned at a Scottsdale resort's pool over the weekend should not have been swimming, police said.
Scottsdale police released more details Wednesday about the child who drowned Saturday.
The boy was with his mother and older sister at the Xona Resort, 7677 E. Princess Blvd., for a Girl Scouts event when the incident occurred around 4:30 p.m. The boy was not participating in the scouting event and was not supposed to be in the pool because he didn't know how to swim, police said.
There were no lifeguards, and there is no indication that any adults were watching the boy, police said.
Witnesses placed the boy near the pool's edge prior to the incident, but no one reported how he got into the water, police said.
A resort guest reportedly pulled the boy out of the pool after seeing him floating face down, police said. The child was unresponsive and was airlifted to Phoenix Children's Hospital, where he died just before 6 p.m.
Police are continuing to investigate the drowning.
