A 2-year-old boy nearly drowned Friday afternoon in a southeast Mesa pool, but was revived by a family friend and is expected to survive.
A group of people was sitting around a pool in the 4800 block of South Romano shortly after 3:30 p.m. when another child noticed the little boy was drowning and pulled him from a wading area, said Ivard Brimley, a Mesa Fire Department spokesman.
A family friend immediately administered cardiopulmonary resuscitation, he said. The little boy vomited and then started breathing again.
Brimley said Mesa paramedics also assisted the little boy, who was flown by helicopter to Banner Desert Medical Center as a precaution.
"The thing that probably saved him was the knowing of CPR and the quick response," he said. "With the quick response, they have a better chance. I think anyone who responds quickly in a stressful situation is heroic."
The boy's name was not released.
