A 3-year-old Phoenix boy drowned in his family's backyard pool Saturday.
Phoenix police said the child, Angel Gaspar Ornelas, had been playing outside while his parents and five other children - the oldest 17 and the youngest an infant - were inside the home near 91st Avenue and Thomas Road.
A brother found the boy in the pool about 3:40 p.m. He was not breathing, and family members performed CPR on the child until paramedics arrived.
The boy was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital. His name was not released.
It was not clear how long the boy had been submerged. Detective Stacie Derge said the pool was fenced, and it was not immediately known how the boy managed to breach the barrier.
No charges have been filed in the case.
It was the third child drowning in Maricopa County this year. A 3-year-old Phoenix girl drowned at an Ahwatukee Foothills apartment complex on May 17 as adults and children swam nearby. And a 15-month-old boy died May 7 after slipping into an unfenced pool in Glendale; his mother said the child wandered into the backyard as she slept.
