A 3-year-old boy drowned Saturday after he slipped open a gate and sank silently into a backyard pool, the Phoenix Fire Department said.
The boy's uncle pulled the child out of the pool around 6:30 p.m., said Battalion Chief Terry Shields. He said it was not known how long the boy was in the water.
A police officer was in the neighborhood and got to the house, in the 2400 block of East Mitchell Drive, within 20 seconds, Shields said, and paramedics responded within 90 seconds. The boy was pronounced dead at Maricopa Medical Center, Shields said.
The uncle and father were inside, Shields said, and the child was alone in a fenced patio area.
