A 4-year-old boy is OK after nearly drowning in a pool at Avondale's Hilton Garden Inn on Saturday night, authorities said.
About 6 p.m., the boy's father was holding the boy in the pool while letting him swim in circles when the man's daughter, also a toddler, attempted to jump into the pool, Avondale Fire-Rescue spokesman Art Snapp
said. The father let go of the boy to grab the girl and put her back out of the water, Snapp said. When he turned back around, the boy had slipped underwater.
He pulled him out immediately and began tending to him, Snapp said. The boy was unresponsive for a moment, but then began coughing up water. He was fine when firefighters arrived at the hotel, near Avondale Boulevard and Interstate 10, but he was taken to Phoenix Children's Hospital as a precaution.
Snapp reminded adults to keep a constant eye on children and to always use flotation devices.
"Even when you're with your kids, things can happen," he said. "You can be a foot from them and unless you're watching them constantly, there's an opportunity for them to get hurt."
It was unclear where the family was from or how long they had been staying at the hotel.
