A 2-year-old boy nearly drowned in an Ahwatukee home swimming pool, police said.

Fire officials said Chase Smith was showing no signs of brain activity Tuesday, three days after he climbed out a doggy door and fell into his family's backyard pool.

The accident occurred Saturday about 11:30 a.m. in the 16400 block of South 46th Place.

Fire officials said the boy's mother took him to Ahwatukee Foothills Urgent Care at 4545 E. Chandler Blvd., less than a mile from the home.

The boy, wet with no clothing, wasn't breathing and didn't have a pulse on arrival, authorities said.

Paramedics arrived at Urgent Care within three minutes and took the boy to Desert Samaritan Medical Center, fire officials said.

Authorities say that deciding what to do in an emergency situation such as a drowning can be difficult, with emotions running high.

"Oftentimes, this is a very traumatic situation especially for a parent to find their child in that situation," said Detective Stacie Derge, a Phoenix police spokeswoman.

She said that driving during a trauma can be dangerous, with the added risk of a traffic accident.

"Really the best thing to do in that situation is call 911 and wait for paramedics," Derge said.
