BUCKEYE, AZ – An 8-month-old baby is fighting for her life after nearly drowning in a bathtub on Tuesday morning.
Police and fire crews were called to the home near 27th and Southern avenues in Buckeye at 5:45 a.m., according to Lieutenant Jared Griffith with the Buckeye Police Department.
The baby's mother, Patricia Franzen, reportedly told police she found the infant unresponsive in the bathtub of the home.
"The mother found the baby and called 9-1-1," Griffith said. "She began CPR until the fire department got there. Who then took over CPR."
Griffith said the baby had a faint pulse and respirations when transported by helicopter to St. Joseph’s Hospital.
Neighbors said the incident must be a tragic accident.
"You know, as far as I am concerned, they are real responsible and it's a tragic thing that happened," said Jim Berdick, who lives next door.
Other neighbors urged people to always watch their children, especially around water.
"You always gotta keep an eye on them. You can't leave them for a second," said Rober Rigler, another neighbor.
The baby girl is listed in critical condition, but police say her condition is improving.
