It's a mistake anyone can make, but a few minutes of inattention cost an Apache Junction girl her life Friday night.
The 9-year-old girl drowned in her family's backyard pool after swimming with friends, fire officials said.
The girl's family told emergency crews that the girl hadn't come into the house after swimming, but that it took several minutes for them to notice, Apache Junction Fire Marshal Dave Montgomery said.
She'd been underwater for up to five minutes before she was found, officials said.
Police and emergency crews administered CPR but could not get her breathing again. She was pronounced dead at Maricopa Medical Center shortly after 8 p.m.
