A 5-year-old boy was pulled from the bottom of a swimming pool after nearly drowning at a Glendale home Wednesday afternoon.
The boy was reportedly in the backyard playing with his mother at a home near 75th Avenue and Union Hills Drive. The mother went inside for a moment, leaving the boy alone in the yard. When the mother returned, she found her son at the bottom of the swimming pool. The woman jumped in, pulled the boy out and began performing CPR.
Glendale fire officials arrived at the home in the 7800 block of West Kerry Lane around 4:30 p.m. The child was breathing when emergency crews arrived but was airlifted to Phoenix Children's Hospital.
There was a fence installed around the swimming pool, but objects near the fence allowed the boy to climb over, Glendale firefighter Daniel Valenzuela said.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with this family,” Valenzuela said. “This is an important reminder to never become complacent around water. We want to remind parents to do their best to be sure there are no objects near the pool fence.”
