A 62-year-old man drowned Tuesday after he slipped into the Verde River while trying to save a friend.
The man was hiking along the Verde River near Bartlett Lake with a female friend when she slipped while trying to cross the river, said Sgt. Don Rosenberger, spokesman for the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office. The man tried to help her, then slipped himself.
He was last seen clinging to some rocks along the side of the river.
"He ultimately broke loose of those rocks and fell under," Rosenberger said.
The woman last saw the man about 2:30 p.m. Divers recovered his body about three hours later. The woman was not injured. The man's name was not released Tuesday night, pending notification of relatives.
