A 4-year-old boy died Wednesday night, about two hours after his grandmother pulled him from a backyard swimming pool.
The boy hadn't been seen for at least five minutes when he was found in the pool at a home in the 200 block of East St. John Road, said Phoenix Fire Capt. Doug Mummert. A woman performed CPR on the boy with instructions from a 911 dispatcher, but the boy was not breathing when firefighters arrived.
The pool was fenced, said Deputy Chief Bob Khan, but fire officials are investigating how the boy breached it. It appears a gate may not have been closing and latching properly, Khan said. A raft was in the pool when firefighters arrived at the home.
The boy's name was not immediately released. He was the ninth child to drown in Phoenix this year.
