Two children were victims of near drownings in Tempe and Mesa Wednesday.
Nick Ervin, 2, remains in critical condition at Desert Samaritan Medical Center after he fell into a swimming pool about 2 p.m. Wednesday in the 6400 block of East Holiday Drive in Mesa. Assistant Fire Chief Mary Cameli said parents told her the boy opened a closed gate to get into the pool. The boy's mother, police officers and firefighters administered CPR before he was airlifted to the hospital. Tempe firefighters responded to a near drowning in the 2000 block of South McClintock Drive around 6 p.m.
The victim, a 4- to 5-year-old girl, was breathing on her own when firefighters arrived. Fire Inspector Junior Pepper said adults were in the pool when the girl went under.
She was taken to Desert Samaritan Medical Center for observation, where she was listed unstable condition.
