Two young girls, both residents of the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community, died Saturday after being pulled from the Arizona Canal on the reservation east of Scottsdale.
The unidentified cousins, ages 3 and 4, were taken to Scottsdale Healthcare Osborn, where they were pronounced dead, said Detective Lt. Kim Pound, a Salt River Tribal Police spokesman.
The tragedy happened at a canal crossing on Alma School Road, just South of McDonald Drive, Pound said. Authorities were called after a passerby spotted the 4-year-old in the water. About 30 minutes later, the father of the second girl found her in the canal about one-quarter of a mile farther west.
Pound said as investigation was underway to determine how the girls fell into the canal. Their names were withheld pending notification of relatives.
