A 5-year-old boy drowned and a 2-year-old girl was taken to the hospital Sunday in two separate incidents involving backyard pools, Phoenix fire officials said.
The boy, Tyler Mathews, walked outside through a sliding door at 10831 W. Montecito Ave., and into the pool around 6 p.m., Phoenix Fire Department spokesman Terry Shields said.
His parents, who were both ill and had been inside watching television, pulled the boy out of the pool and tried to revive him, Shields said.
He was later pronounced dead at Good Samaritan Regional Medical Center, Shields said.
The girl was at a party at 4447 E. Lafayette Blvd. with several children and adult chaperones when she entered the pool just before 4 p.m., Shields said.
She started breathing after an adult began resuscitation, but was taken to Good Samaritan Regional Medical Center for observation, Shields said.
