Holly Rain, a 19-month-old, became Phoenix's 10th drowning fatality Friday after falling into a pool on Thursday afternoon.
While her mother was in the bathroom at their house in Phoenix, the little girl opened the back door, toddled outside and fell into the pool.
"The child had just learned the day before how to open the back door on her own," said Bob Stein, a spokesman with the Phoenix Fire Department. "It was a freak accident."
Although the pool was fenced, the fence had been propped open.
When firefighters arrived at the scene, the girl was no longer breathing. Holly was flown to Good Samaritan Hospital and Medical Center, where she was placed on life support.
There have been 10 drownings and 32 near drownings in Phoenix.
